Maintenance
At Jumpstart we have a "can do" attitude which together with our complete flexibility allows us to cater for just about any support requirements.
Like all IT support companies Jumpstart Technologies cater for emergency call out for those unforeseen problems. The particulars of how any fault should be dealt with are agreed with the client at an early stage in our relationship. This allows us to concentrate on solving problems when the time comes.
Over recent years the majority of software has become considerably more robust and reliable in day to day use. That should certainly not be taken as an indication that no maintenance is required. On the contrary in fact. An analysis of the types of call recieved we have recieved over recent years has show that the problems experienced are now more often caused by something that could have been prevented or predicted at an earlier stage. For example a routine maintenance visit can highlight the first indications of a hard drive failing in a server or PC. This can allow you to manage the down time and inconvenience and reduce overall costs before disaster stirkes.
Similar to preventative maintenance visits, our monitoring services offer piece of mind ensuring backups are working, antivirus software is upto date and working, and server logs are OK. Tied in with preventative maintenance visits, callout requirements can be reduced significantly, reducing the your overall IT costs.
Modern internet connections and remote access technologies have enabled us to provide a good level of support via remote access, therefore reducing costs, reducing delays and ultimately improving the service we provide to customers.
SMALL BUSINESSES DO NEED A DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN!
Jumpstart Technologies have the expertise to advise and assist in producing a realistic disaster recovery plan for your business. This extends beyond the physical IT services you sit in front of every day to include basic information such as necessary contacts, procedures and requirements in the event of various disaster scenarios. We have worked closely with several businesses in the past to produce a disaster recovery pack that not only helps when things go wrong but also proved very useful in the day to day operation of the business.
Other Services
As well as our maintenance services, our experience enables us to offer further services including the following
We provide basic website development to small business looking at getting a foot hold on the Internet. These are generally based on a wide range of ready made templates, therefore reducing costs and development time. Once you have your foot hold, we have several design studios and web development companies we recommend. As well as this site, examples include
- Shoes On The Move
- Cowley Di Giorgio Solicitors
Working in the IT industry you are often required to work along side other trades and services. We have established relationships with companies in many trades and sectors, allowing us to bring them all together under a single project to provide an efficient office move or office refit for your business.
Replacing outdated IT equipment is often more complicated that it first seems, particularly where many or all users will be affected. There must be a basic plan in place so everyone knows what to expect, how to deal with it, and to ensure that the outcome is an improved system installed with the minimum of fuss.
Our skills in project management are based upon several years experience of working in corporate environments managing large hardware and software rollouts and upgrades.
With this in mind we have no problems in managing and dealing with any IT project work in the SME market.
Hardware
The choice of hardware and peripherals can often lead to confusion and frustration. Jumpstart will assess your requirements and recommend the best hardware, as well as providing installation, configuration, and training where needed.
We can supply and recommend a full range of PC and laptop hardware spec'd to your requirements.
Do not be fooled into thinking a £300 special offer PC with free screen and a printer will do what you want it to do.
Few people are aware of what GHZ, MB, and GB mean in the real world. All too often we are called out to look at relatively new PC's that are simply under spec'd for what they are being used for. A well spec'd PC with operating system and screen is going to cost you £450 - £500 minimum, REGARDLESS of where you buy it. Future profing is also an important consideration. It is still possible to purchase the same spec PC's that were being sold 3 years ago, for just a few hundred pounds... but if its 3 year old technology how well is it going to handle this years new software? BADLY is the simple answer.
If you are at the stage of installing your first server, or replacing an existing server there are a mass of questions to be answered before you can make the right decision. Two of the first items on your shopping list MUST BE
- UPS (battery backup)
- Backup Device and routine
whilst these are top of your shopping list, you must specify capacities after the rest of the server has been decided up to ensure they suit you needs.
Software, cost, capacity, throughput, lifespan, reliability, warranty, and physical environment are just some of the item that must be considered before purchase.
Do not buy a server without knowing eaxactly what you need. So called "servers" are advertised for as little as £299, but this will get you little more than a PC built in a case that says server on it.
Wireless networks are inadequate for many businesses. whilst security has been one of the biggest concerns regarding these systems, another huge one that is often overlooked is the their performance in terms of bandwidth. For general internet and email access they are generall fine. In standalone PC environments they are generally fine. If you are continually accessing files on a server we will always advise the use of a wired network. If you are using database applications such as access or sage accross a network, wireless is an absolute NO NO!
Purchasing. We are able to supply, install and configure a huge range of printers as well as advise as to the best model and manufacturer for the job.
The biggest question over printers is purchase cost over running costs. Calcutate how much printing you intend to do, and do the maths. Price up the replacement toners, cartridges, imaging drums etc against the cost of buying the next model up that will likely have a larger print capacity per toner etc.
Repair and service - we are able to offer a range of repair and maintenance services for nearly all HP printers as well as selected other manufacturers.
We are able to install supply, upgrade, relocate and reconfigure a variety of telephone systems. We specialise in Panasonic, Samsung. We also have experience of a wide selection fo other systems including Avaya's IP office range providing integration with you Microsoft Outlook.
Structured cabling is essential in an office environment. Wherever a new installation is taking place it is always advisable to include both telephony and data in the spec. Without it time consuming and costly problems can occur, and prove difficult to rectify. Smaller installation are carried out in-house, whilst larger jobs are passed to our tried and tested sub contractor. The benefits are easy relocation of phone extensions and data ports anywhere within the cabled offices. Easy tracking of faults on either phone system or data network. Potential cost savings can also be gained in the long run. One customer recently had a quote for £180 callout from their telephone system maintenace company just to swap four extension numbers between different offices. On structured cabling this could be acheived in under a minute by just about anyone.
Working closely with a trusted contractor for several years we now include a full range of industrial and commercial electrical installation in our portfolio.
Software
Software can generall be catagorised as follows,
- Foundation Generally Microsoft based, your foundation alone is of little use, but all other software will require a stable foundation on which to run.
- Operational This is the software your users rely on to run you business, email, internet, word processing, spreadsheets, accountancy and databases to name just a few.
- Security Things such as firewalls, antivirus, and antispam to keep you foundation stable and your operational software working reliably and securely.
In the case of most Microsoft (and others) business products there are several ways in which to purchase software. There are significant pro's and con's to take into consideration not least the short term and long term costs involved. Jumpstart technologies are able to guide and advise you through to the solution that will best suit your requirements.
We have specialised and recommended Microsoft SBS for several years now. In short it brings corporate software solutions to the small business market at a considerable cost saving.
Windows Server - bring together the basic of any server based network, including DNS, DHCP, File & print sharing, and central management
Microsoft Exchange - far more than just an email server, this corporate software offers a mass of fuctionality and options. Designed to integrate with Microsoft outlook, Exchange is now also capable of providing web and mobile access solutions.
Internet Security & Acceleration server - acts as a firewall and proxy server for you entire network. This is a considerable cost saving over expensive hardware firewall, and whilst not considered "top of the range" it is ideal for the majority of small business environments.
SQL server - Microsofts database server is being used by a growing number of 3rd party softwares as its back ground database engine. The requirement for SQL in small business would cost several thousand pounds without Small Business Server
Remote Web Workplace - gives a simple cost effective method to allow your users to work from home, a client site or out on the road. Effectively giving full office desktop functionality from just about anywhere.
At present we have seen little in the way of market requirement for Vista. There is a significant performance drop campared to XP on equivalant hardware and at the time of writing, we have not recommended it to any of our business customers. Microsoft have confirmed support of Windows XP until 2012. It is likely that in coming years we will see certain softwares begin to require vista as an operating system. Jumpstart Technologies have the capabilities to provide, configure and support either option, and are monitoring the market to ensure that when the time comes the right choice is made.
There are a wide range of Antivirus product available in todays market, and on the whole they are cabable of doing the same job. There are however pro's and con's to each, and at Jumpstart we have years of experience in deciding which is best for your needs.
To begin with spam is a nuisance, but it is not uncommon in a business network environment for it to become more than that. There is little can be done to stop the creation and receipt of spam email, but there are a number of filtering solutions that reduce its impact, particularly on your users, in terms of time and hassle. Jumpstart Technologies have been a reseller of GFI's Mail Essentials for a number of years now and it has become known as one of the best available.
